Personally I vastly prefer the handheld form factor for VNs and ADVs. The Nintendo DS especially had some that used the dual screen in novel ways - "9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors" placing narration on the bottom screen and ADV-style dialogue and portraits on the top screen felt very natural...
