Share your desktops / backgrounds

Post by maru »

Tell me about your desktop aesthetics. Share the whole desktop or just some cool backgrounds.

I don't have my Windows machine onhand while I'm on the road, but here's the Mac (I feel like it's becoming my main computer again after all >_>)...

I also have included a few backgrounds from properties very dear to me: Subahibi, Sora no Woto and of course, the Nasuverse.

the wallpapers here are from nakomo's pixiv, which i used to source a lot of my wallpapers from. they're pretty and often quite hi-res (some go up to 4k?).

I use my desktop to store things I'm actively working on so I don't forget them, which means having a simple background is generally preferable. Right now I'm using this, which is an edited version of the phone wallpaper from Steins;Gate. Kind of hard to make out the detail, which is the point.

Before that I was using this screenshot of a small boathouse and shack I built on a friend's creative Minecraft server.

I used to care a lot more about my ~aesthetics~ but that's given way to pragmatism lately, especially as I begin work on larger projects.

Death thought about it.

Unfortunately I never keep icons on my desktops, so they're just little blank slates.

some person on /r/unixporn recently made a go program that maps a color scheme onto an image for use as a background, but i couldn't get it to compile on my guixsd machine.

i spent the last few days learning some more common lisp and reimplementing their super simple algorithm. rn the program has no UI, file paths are hard coded, and the output image is a bit crusty but it modifies images properly.

below is one of the images matilde linked above thrown through the program with the colors from my website applied to it.

hopefully i'll have a fully riced desktop to show in a bit, i've been messing around with swayfx recently but got a bit distracted with this for the past few days haha. the rest of the setup should be fairly straightforward, so hopefully the rest comes together pretty quickly.

oh, right, i've been back home for a while now…

my primary monitor (source deleted, danbooru mirror):

a secondary monitor, more cluttered to give off a more daily-use feel (pixiv source):
the strawberry window is usually kept there, the neofetch usually isn't.

as for other fun ones… i'm kinda proud of my efforts to theme haiku. it's not fully perfect, and there are some ui elements that haiku doesn't let you recolor at all, but i like how it turned out (pixiv source):
unfortunately, that vm broke when i tried to update it to the latest version, and i can't get it to look quite right when trying to move it to a fresh install.

and then here's one of the oldest ones of this computer… which i'm pretty sure i made and posted to fedi specifically for the meme (gentoo wallpaper by nakomo, arch wallpaper by catzz):

My desktop is boring. I used to be really into fancy rices and suchlike but nowadays I mostly care about having something comfortable and functional
